1. The Critique of the Binary Tug-of-War (BSRI to Kachel 2016)
Historical scales, starting with Sandra Bem’s 1974 BSRI, made progress by measuring masculinity and femininity on separate scales, but remained anchored to stereotypical gender roles (assertive = male, gentle = female).
In 2016, Kachel, Steffens, and Niedlich demonstrated that measuring gender roles via cultural stereotypes fails to capture modern identity and produces harmful confounding.
Gender Atlas eliminates gender role stereotypes entirely. Our six axes measure somatic, relational, and bodymind resonance across independent coordinates: NB, AV, GF, FK, MK, and AD.

2. Deep Dive: Definitions of the 6 Coordinates
• NB · Non-Binary: Affirmative identification with umbrella language outside the binary poles (WPATH SOC-8 Ch.8).
• AV · Agender / Void: Low salience of internal gender signals; neutral holding. Not a deficit, but a spacious absence of gender taxonomies (Kachel et al. 2016).
• GF · Genderfluid: Temporal and contextual variability across time and bodymind states (Iantaffi & Barker 2017).
• FK · Femme Kinship: Belonging resonance with feminine embodiment, expression, and community spaces.
• MK · Masc Kinship: Belonging resonance with masculine embodiment, expression, and community spaces.
• AD · Androgyne: Simultaneous co-presence and blending of both energies within a unified container.
FK and MK can both register high simultaneously without logical contradiction.

Deeper Questions
Do my six axis scores have to sum up to 100?
No. The Gender Atlas coordinate space is oblique (non-orthogonal). Each axis is measured on an independent 0–100 scale based on weighted item responses. You could theoretically score high on both FK and MK, or low across all axes.
What does an "Exploring" status mean for an axis?
An axis receives an exploring status when coverage is below 60% or fewer than 2 items were answered on that dimension. Instead of computing a noisy, uncertain score, we preserve your space to explore.
